1st Amendment - I will always defend your right to speak your mind.
The First Amendment is first for a reason. The rights to speak, advocate, criticize, disagree, practice the religion of your choice, or not practice any religion at all are the very heart of our way of life. We are at a serious crossroad when Congress does not call our President to task when he announces to the world that one of his responsibilities as president is to educate Americans about Islam. Yet the coach of your son’s football team, or your daughter’s basketball team cannot bow their head in prayer before a game. When a federal judge rules that having a national day of prayer is unconstitutional, that judge should be impeached.
The White House belongs to the citizens of this country. Every four years, we elect a president. We loan the president the use of our house, rent free, so he can do his job, which is to protect our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Last July the White House posted the e-mail address flag@whitehouse.gov, asking us to “report” suspicious or “fishy” speech. We are at a serious crossroad when the President asks us to report our neighbors, and Congress does not call him to task. At the same time, leaders of the President’s own political party in Congress called those who speak out at town hall meetings terrorists, and worse. Anger is a sign of a healthy democracy. I will stand up for those who exercise their right to free speech, not be bullied by those who disagree.
