Climate and the Environment - I believe our climate is now, and always has been changing.

Visit the Colorado National Monument outside Grand Junction.  There you see beautiful sheer rock walls a thousand feet high.  A video in the Visitor’s Center explains that in the last three hundred million years, Colorado has been under the ocean twice, covered by a fresh water lake, seen ice ages, glaciers, and tropical forests.  Human history is in the dust at the very top of those walls.  The inconvenient truth is that humans had nothing to do with the coming and going of oceans, lakes, glaciers and tropical forests in the past. Whether we use horses or tractors to raise the crops and animals that feed our nation and whether we drive Toyotas, Fords, or ride bicycles, our actions will not stop the oceans, lakes, glaciers, and tropical forests that will cover Colorado in the next three hundred million years.  However, if we are not careful, we will lose the economic battle of this century to countries that care more about their economic progress than about their environment. The "cap and trade" legislation now being considered in Congress will be an economic disaster for Colorado.

We should be responsible stewards of the bounty we have been provided by our creator.  We should reduce, re-use and recycle.  We should conserve gas when we drive, and energy when we heat our homes.  Americans have achieved air and water quality that is the envy of the rest of the world.  We should be proud of what we have accomplished, not bullied by those who seek an environment where nothing changes.  Change is inevitable.  Some years will be dry and some will be wet.  Some will be warm and some will be cold.  Species will disappear, and new species will appear just as they have in the past.  Management of our natural resources by lawsuits seeking to stop the inevitable cycles of life and death and change is irresponsible.  We need to bring sanity back to the management of our natural resources.  I will propose changes to environmental laws to end lawsuits by private citizens and organizations so we can use our forests.  Repeal the Endangered Species Act.

I believe we need to rein in the power of the EPA that has expanded at a rapid pace over recent years as evidenced by the recent announcement that the EPA will regulate CO2 levels. The EPA is out of control; it is costing American’s billions of dollars in unnecessary and unfair regulations and it needs to either be re-chartered or eliminated.  We are watching a mediocre volcano in Iceland put more CO2 in the air every day than all the industry in history.

The next round of improvements in our air and water quality will be unaffordable.  China, India, Brazil, and the rest of the world should match what we have already accomplished before we embark on expensive and unproven experiments to seek the impossible--an environment that never changes.
