We have lost our edge in education. We have fallen way behind in math, science and engineering. Too many kids are dropping out of school. Too many of those who do graduate do not have the skills to compete in a global economy. We need to get our schools back on track fast. Everyone, students, grandparents, parents, teachers, administrators, and yes, unions must help in this effort. Education standards cannot be based on the slowest students. We need to celebrate creativity. We need to reward excellence.
I believe in choice in education. Parents choose whether to home school or not, what their children eat, how much sleep they get at night, how much exercise they get, whether they do their homework, and what they wear to school. Vouchers allow choice regarding which school their children will attend. Administrators choose the resources they will devote to children who want to excel. Teachers choose whether to set high standards for themselves and their students. We need to reward good teachers with pay for performance. No teacher who doesn't meet standards should be protected by tenure. Insist your taxes are put to the best possible use in educating our children.
