Health Care - I believe small steps in the right direction are better than big steps in the wrong direction.
We should apply that motto as we decide how to reform our health care system, WE NEED TO SLOW DOWN. I have been an EMT almost eight years. I worked on the Custer County Ambulance Corps for five years, and was a member of the Custer County Search and Rescue team. I am part of the Northwestern Colorado Medical Reserve Corps. I have learned a lot about both the practice and the politics of rural medical care. I want to learn more. I will listen to your ideas and concerns about health care.
I believe it is time to step back and start over from a goals oriented approach. We need to repeal the Health Care Law and replace it with common sense solutions to the real problems we face.
1. Our first goal should be to preserve what we have now, the best health care in the world.
2. Our second goal should be to bring costs under control so health care is more affordable. Examples:
- Allow interstate shopping for medical insurance.
- Eliminate pre-existing conditions that prohibit buying health insurance.
- Stop abuse of emergency rooms—treat only emergencies.
- Institute tort reform so that frivolous and outrageous lawsuits are eliminated. We need to adopt the British system for legal fees, where the loser pays the winner’s costs of litigation
Once we agree on goals, we need to create a health care system that meets those goals.
Wellness: Any health care reform must encourage wellness. Americans are overweight. We do not get enough exercise. Our kids watch sports instead of playing sports. We pay for chemotherapy for people with lung cancer who will not quit smoking. We pay for heart surgery for people who will not lose weight. We need to be honest. Our sedentary lifestyle and the choices we make in our habits and in our diet add enormously to the cost of health care. Reforming health care should start with all of us trying to be healthier people.
We need to recognize that sometimes there are poor outcomes in health care, just as there are in every other part of life. When you or someone you love suffers a poor outcome, you should receive reasonable compensation. Workers compensation is a good model for this. We need to take lawyers and lawsuits out of our health care system.
We should take small steps in the right direction to fix the parts of our health care system that are obviously broken. We need to see how test projects such as the telemedicine pilot program at the clinic in Westcliffe work to improve rural health care. We need to explore every option for lowering health care costs.
Obamacare is a massive federal intrusion into our private lives. One hundred fifty new agencies, boards and commissions, along with 16,000 additional IRS agents will take us into a third-world environment where bribery, corruption, and criminals are a way of life. I have traveled in those countries. Trust me, that is not the America we want.
