Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site - I oppose any expansion of Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site.

Potential expansion of the Pinon Canyon training area is a complex and emotional issue as we know.  I am committed to stay involved and vigilant regarding this issue.  I am in a unique position as a candidate for US Congress based on my past experience as a combat commander and a retired Army officer.  I ask hard questions and insist on straight answers.  I am familiar with training soldiers, ranching, and the Western life style that is the very heart of Colorado.  I support private property rights and I will defend them against any intrusion.

My recent contact with the Ft Carson command group confirms what I was told last November before I toured PCMS.  There is no present need to expand the training area.  This could change after 2013 when all four brigades of the 4th Infantry Division are expected to be home from combat deployments.  At that point, the need to expand the training area is considered a possibility, but by no means a certainty. 

I was also told, as I was last November, that if the Army sees a need for more land, it will be seeking out willing land-owners who will voluntarily lease or sell their land.  That will be their personal decision.  In my view, this gives every land owner an effective “veto” over expansion.  Army representatives know the expansion was not handled well in the past and they appear determined to improve relations with the local community surrounding the PCMS.

As a candidate and as your representative in Congress, I will stand with property owners around the PCMS.  I will stay engaged and keep you informed.  I will work with Army leaders to insure that your private property rights are factored into any decision regarding PCMS.  This appears headed in the right direction and I am committed to keep it that way.
