Americans know far better than the federal government how to best use the money they earn.  The starting point for reducing our tax burden is a massive reduction in government spending.  I favor a balanced budget amendment.  That amendment should prohibit congress from appropriating more money in any year than was generated in tax revenue during the previous year.  The only exception to this should be in time of war declared by congress under Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution.

Our tax code is too complicated. I favor lowering everyone's taxes.  The 16th Amendment was ratified in 1913 to allow congress to raise revenue. Yet today, congressmen use tax laws to punish behavior they don’t like, and reward special interest in return for votes. John Salazar has introduced legislation to give tax breaks to those who provide care for Alzheimer's patients and continue the death tax.  I will vote to end the estate tax completely. The tax code is too complicated for any of us, including congressmen to understand.  The best way to correct this abuse of the power we gave congress to raise revenue is to repeal the 16th Amendment, abolish the tax code entirely and go to a FairTax which everyone pays. 

VAT-Value Added Tax:  I am absolutely against VAT. We can expect a major push for VAT by the Administration and the Democrat Congress, probably after the Nov elections. They have spent our treasure and that of our children and grandchildren. The solution to the monumental debt is stop spending and cancel many of the previous bad decisions, but they will not do that. So, their solution is more tax. VAT will squarely hit the middle and lower economic classes in spite of Mr. Obama’s multiple promises not to do so.
